Stichters waren twee Belgische juristen, Paul Otlet (1868-1944), geestelijke vader van de documentatie, en Henri La Fontaine (1854-1943), winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede. Zij hadden de ambitie om alle kennis van de wereld te verzamelen en te ordenen volgens de Universele Decimale Classificatie (UDC) die zij zelf op punt gesteld hadden. Het Mundaneum lag aan de basis van diverse internationale instellingen gewijd aan kennis en saamhorigheid en evolueerde in de 20e eeuw tot een universeel documentatiecentrum. De collecties, duizenden boeken, dagbladen, documenten allerhande, affiches, glasplaten, postkaarten en bibliografische fiches, werden ondergebracht op diverse Brusselse locaties waaronder het Jubelpark. Later kwam het idee van een grandioze Wereldstad (Cité Mondiale) waarvoor Le Corbusier plannen en maquettes ontwierp. Met deze Cité wilde men op wereldschaal alle grote instellingen van intellectuele arbeid samen brengen: bibliotheken, musea en universiteiten. Dit project is echter nooit tot stand gekomen. Het Mundaneum zelf, utopisch als het was, werd algauw achterhaald door de snelle technologische ontwikkelingen van zijn tijd. De documentaire nalatenschap die thans bewaard wordt bevat het persoonlijk archief van de stichters, alsmede boeken, documenten allerhande, affiches, postkaarten en glasplaten. Andere belangrijke onderdelen zijn het Répertoire Bibliographique Universel, het Musée International de la Presse en archieffondsen met betrekking tot drie thema's: pacifisme, anarchisme en feminisme. Het Mundaneum is thans gevestigd in Mons en beschikt sinds 1998 over een expositieruimte met een scenografie van de hand van François Schuiten en Benoît Peeters. In deze ruimte worden tussen heden en verleden tentoonstellingen en conferenties gehouden met betrekking tot dit uitzonderlijk patrimonium. Er wordt gewerkt aan een grote herdenking ter gelegenheid van de honderdste verjaardag van de Nobelprijs van Henri La Fontaine in 2013.
